Government employees cannot decide which office they can work in: President
President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that Government or Civil Service employees cannot decide by themselves as to which office or agency they can work in.

He made the statement speaking in the opening ceremony of Expo Maldives 2015 in Dharubaaruge.

President Yameen said that no Government or Civil Service employee can dictate the terms of where they will work. That decision, he said, rests with the Government.

His statement comes at a time when some employees of Finance Ministry had gone to strike over the reassignment of 75 Finance Ministry employees to other Ministries.

President Yameen said that until the reassignment is finalized, the employees should attend work in their current workplace. He added that going on strike in the name of securing lost rights will not yield any benefits.

“No Government employee can tell me that he will work in a certain office. That is not acceptable,” he said.

The President said that the Government will make a decision on where the employee will be employed based on their qualifications and capabilities and talent.

President Yameen said that strict action will be taken on those employees who resort to protests and added that the salaries of those employees who refuse to work will be slashed as well.

President Yameen added that World Bank and IMF had no say on who can and cannot be employed in Finance Ministry. He noted that Maldives was took part in such organizations as a member and that any issues relating to those organizations will be overseen by the Government.

The President stressed that the Government is in need of productive employees and not just highly educated individuals.
