Employees, resources needed to improve civil service: Dr. Shameem
Civil Service Commission (CSC) President Dr. Ali Shameem has said that resources, employees and incentives were needed to improve civil service.

Dr. Shameem made the statement speaking in the ceremony held to launch the five year strategic plan for the Civil Service Commission and to celebrate the achievements of the past five years for the service.

Dr. Shameem said that there were many complaints by the public regarding the civil service as well as a profound lack of essential services that have to be provided to the civil servants.

He added that there were many issues such as lack of cooperation between Government agencies, lack of response for phone calls and slow response times. Additionally, Dr. Shameem noted that conduct of civil servants have to be improved, while incentives have to be increased and supervision of the sector has to be strengthened.

“Civil Service is the engine of the Government administration and as such have to function in harmony,” he said.

Dr. Shameem added that building rent costs and other costs are on the rise while the issue of salary is also key. He also noted that the CSC was working to start a loan scheme for higher education of the civil service employees.

Dr. Shaheem added that the second strategic plan for the Service was drawn up after one and half years of discussions with key stakeholders.

He said that the challenges faced in the first strategic plan had been addressed in the second strategic plan. Dr. Shameem said they had to change the first plan due to political changes, lack of travel opportunities to the islands to rectify the issues and challenges in training civil service employees in the islands.
