Eco care, an environmental NGO, has called on the government to cease their oil exploration mission immediately.
The group made the appeal in a statement published on their website on Monday.
The statement said that if the world wished to achieve a 2C goal, then 80 percent of coal, 50 percent of gas and 30 of oil have to be kept as reserves.
The statement noted that Maldives was the first nation to push for the climate change agenda and the effects of climate change on low lying and small island nations. The statement commended the Maldivian delegation at COP21 and the work carried out by the delegation.
Eco care said that if the Maldives was calling for renewable energy, then the nation has to be at the forefront in implementing such a strategy.
The group congratulated the agreement complied from the COP 21 summit. The group said that they will be working with the international 20+ to resolve environmental issues.
