President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has appealed to all national and international figures to work together to establish a culture of respect in the Maldivian society.
He made the statement released to mark the International Human Rights Day.
President Yameen said that if a culture of respect is allowed to thrive in the nation, promoting and preserving human rights will become a daily aspect of the nation.
He added that the legal framework and procedures were not enough by themselves.
He further noted that the government’s current policy for human rights is to empower the citizens, grant opportunities for personal growth and fulfil their needs as well as raising their living standards.
In his address the President noted the laws implemented in the country on human rights, in addition to the work carried out to make human rights accepted by the public.
