Resale of personal SIM cards is a punishable offence: Police
Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated that resale of SIM cards taken under the name of an individual is a punishable offence.

Speaking in a press conference held yesterday in BML Lite, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdullah Nawaz stated that scams were carried out by using such SIM cards. He added that when the Police investigated such scams and bring in the registered owner of the SIM card in for questioning, it is then discovered that the individual has no connection to the scam.

Nawaz said that the registered owner of the SIM card was responsible for the calls made from that number and as such, citizens had to be made aware of such issues.

He also said that no arrests have been made in connection to the case, but added that the cases were being reviewed as serious issues. As such, Nawaz added that appropriate actions will be taken. He noted that most of the scams are perpetrated by using very basic mobile phones which also poses some difficulties in finding the perpetrators. Nawaz said that such scams are run extremely professionally in developed nations. He noted that the citizens have to be more aware to halt the progression of such scams.

Nawaz concluded by stating that the Police had previously warned of such scams and will continue to do so.
