Every 8th employee is a state employee: Jihad
Finance Minister Abdullah Jihad has stated that every eight employee is paid by the state and that this figure was a high amount even on a global scale.

He made the statement speaking in the Parliament presenting the state budget for the next year.

Minister Jihad said that over 40,000 citizens are under state employment, with the state spending MVR 7 billion as salaries. He noted that this was 25% of next year’s budget. Minister Jihad said that in that case, state employees have to be productive in their work to ensure that a productive society thrived.

Minister Jihad noted that state had spent MVR 72 for every MVR 100 as salaries and administrative costs, usually at the expense of development.

“Therefore, we have to make the system more efficient. We have to promote efficiency, effectiveness and productivity. The Government had lessened the working hours to promote wellbeing, personal development, more family time for state employees,” he said.

Minister Jihad stressed on the importance of pay equality, a pay review commission, revision of pay measures in order to facilitate equality, productivity and wellbeing.
