Sixty one Members of Parliament yesterday passed to impeach incumbent Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor from his position.
He was impeached with the unanimous vote of all 61 MPs present in the session, with MDP MPs abstaining from the vote.
Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Maseeh announced the results of the vote and following the results, declared that Vice President Adeeb had been impeached from his position.
At the start of the debate session, opposition MPs had decried the motion, stating that the vote was filed illegally. However, ruling coalition MPs had alleged that VP Adeeb had betrayed the nation and that the impeachment process was long overdue.
Ruling coalition MPs also had alleged that VP Adeeb was the main culprit behind the assassination attempt at the Presidential speedboat on the 28th of September.
