Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has said that any attempt to create an atmosphere of fear among the public by using fake IEDs or bombs will be taken as acts of terror.
The MNDF statement comes after suspected IEDs were discovered in three areas of capital Male’.
Speaking in a press conference held in Coast Guard building, MNDF Captain Ali Ihsan said that the device discovered near Muleeaage on the 2nd of this month was an IED, but the rest three discovered afterwards were not.
Captain Ihsan said that the device found near STELCO was a device created by using a motherboard, while the device from Customs was created by using wires and a capacitor. He added that the device discovered near Vilimale’ ferry terminal was a device created with an antenna, foil, tubes and a timer. However, he said that none of the three were explosives.
Captain Ihsan said that the security forces were investigating the issue. He also added that overseeing all actions of the 100,000 people that live in Male’ was not a simple feat.
He added that even though the devices were fake, the security forces will approach the matter by following all procedures and will always seek to create a safe and secure environment for the public.
Captain Ihsan appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity, if sighted.
