G.A. Gemanafushi Magistrate Court has sentenced a woman to death by stoning after she confessed to committing adultery.
PG Office has stated that the ruling is nullified under the new penal code and will appeal the ruling.
This is the first time such a sentence has been delivered in the Maldives, even though Islamic Shariah prescribes stoning for adulterers. Saudi Arabia has a strict policy on adulterers, where they will be stoned publicly.
Religious scholars have voiced against changing the laws prescribed in the Shariah to fit the circumstances.
