Ruling PPM has submitted a bill that will criminalize acts against national interests.
The bill was submitted to the parliament by Vilufushi constituency MP and parliamentary group deputy leader Riyaz Rasheed.
The bill states that any act within the Maldives and abroad calling for boycotting tourism and/ or implementing sanction, supporting and actively working to promote such actions will be a criminal act. Additionally, the bill states that any action carried out to intimidate, threaten and frighten tourists will also be declared as in support of boycotting the sector and therefore a criminal act.
MDA Deputy Leader and Parliamentary Group leader Ahmed Amir had stated that MDA will support the bill and that PPM and members of other parties will support the bill as well.
He added that passing such a bill has been long overdue, citing that calling to implement measures against the sector that benefits the whole nation was an injustice. Amir said that such acts need to be halted immediately.
It is expected that apart from some members from MDP, almost all members of the parliament will support the bill. Many citizens have protested such calls for boycotting national industries.
