Health services in Male’ and atolls should be equal- Minister
Acting Health Minister, Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim has stated that the quality of the health services provided in Male’ and the atolls should be equal.

Minister Nazim made this remark speaking at the meeting held at Nasandhura Palace to review and compile health services master plan.

Nazim said that there is a large difference in the quality of the health services provided in the atolls when compared to the health services provided in Male’. He said that this difference should be minimized and the health services of the atolls should be developed.

He said that the appalling state of the health services in some of the islands is at a saddening level and it is important to remove the differences and improve the health services in all of the islands under the new master plan.

In addition to this, the minister noted that some of the hospitals are managed by unqualified people and it is very important to train the management staffs and other staffs of the hospitals and health centers.

“Health Ministry itself is seen as a very weak institution. We see two three people doing all the work. This is not how it should be done. We should train the staff of the ministry. This is one of our aims,” he said.

Meanwhile, The Maldives health sector initiated and embarked its first planning exercise in the beginning of the eighties with its three year medium term plan. Following the medium term plan, the first long term development plan, Health Master Plan 1996 to 2005 was developed and implemented for a decade. Adhering to the principles of primary health care approach, many achievements have been made. Improvements in health indicators such as infant and child mortality, maternal mortality and well as the control of many communicable diseases are noteworthy.
