Environment has to be safe for economic prosperity: Vice President
Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has said that sustainable use of our resources was vital to achieve the Government’s goal of transforming the economy of Maldives, to ensure a more resilient and prosperous future for the Maldivian people.

He made the statement delivering the keynote address at the opening of the Sixth Regional 3R forum in Asia and the Pacific, being held at Dharubaaruge.

Vice President Adeeb stated that it was the priority of the Government to ensure that there was economic self-sufficiency, noting that the nation was heavily on the natural environment for economic growth. He added that the nation’s two main sectors, tourism and fisheries were heavily reliant on proper management and care of the natural environment.

Vice President highlighted the recent development of a national policy on waste management, based on international principles. He also noted the special arrangements made by the Government within the policy to make it economically feasible, environmentally sustainable and locally appropriate.

He added that having 99 resorts signing the 3R accord on Sunday was a push in the right direction towards the drive for sustainable development.

Vice President Adeeb stated that even though the Maldives was a small nation, we have made significant progress in promoting the cause. He assured that the nation will continue to do so in the future.
