Dolphin Restaurant owner Habeeb has stated that the tidal waves of Wednesday night to Diamond Jubilee Carnival area were the largest tidal waves so far.
He added that every year tidal waves were observed but Wednesday’s one were the largest in a while. Habeeb stated that last year large tidal waves were observed in September however, this year the tidal waves stuck in August.
Habeeb noted that there were many things that need to be observed and research needs to be carried out to determine the cause of the waves.
It has to be noted that the seawalls of Male’ are next to Male’, which means that there is no barrier between the water and the land.
The Japanese consultants attached with the seawall project had highlighted the issue. However, as there was minimal understanding of environmental issues and therefore the advice was not acted on.
Recently, Housing Ministry had stated that the west side of Male’ will be developed into an artificial beach, which many believe will resolve the issue of tidal waves. Some also have stated that the reclamation of land for Hulhumale’ phase two had also contributed to the issue.
High waves had continued for the most part of yesterday.
