Vice President calls to cease criticism of private sector

Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has called to cease the political criticism of the private sector and recognize the role the sector played in the developing the nation.

He made the statement delivering the keynote address at the ceremony held to mark the fifth anniversary of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).

Vice President Adeeb stated that services of the Government were heavily reliant on the finances given by the private sector. He added that if there was no robust private sector, taxation processes and the subsequent service provided by taxation will definitely take a hit.

Vice President Adeeb condemned political figures for their criticism of the private sector and stated that they themselves are not diligent tax payers.

He added that in the early days of tourism, resort lease periods were only for five years. He stated that in spite of this factor, the sector had thrived due to the risks taken by the private sector. Vice President Adeeb thanked the Maldivian companies for the risks they undertook.

Vice President Adeeb said that this Government was a Government that introduced lasting economic reform. He added that previously the economic strategy was dependent on the sale of bonds to foreign nations and that had inversely affected the stability of the nation.

Vice President Adeeb congratulated MIRA on their achievements in the past five years.
