Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has diverted a fishing vessel on route to Diego Garcia on Monday.
Speaking to press State Minister for Ministry of Defense and National Security Mohamed Zuhair stated that the vessel was halted as it did not have proper documentation to cross international waters to go to Diego Garcia. Zuhair stated that vessels registered for fishing purposes have to be used only for fishing.
He added that tourist travels required different permits, which were introduced in a bid to protect the tourists and vessel crew from incidents.
Zuhair stated that there were various national and international procedures to be completed prior to engaging in international travel, such as customs and immigration clearance and passports. He noted that the vessel did not have any of the required documentation. As such, Zuhair stated that such incomplete procedures can result in disrupted bilateral relations and potential intergovernmental crisis. He also stated that even if certain parties offered huge sums to carry out such endeavors, it should not be attempted.
MNDF reported that there were 16 Maldivians and 7 foreigners.
