The National Policy on Climate Change has been officially introduced.
In a ceremony held in Hotel Jen yesterday, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim stated that previously some strategies were written down on issue but this is the first time a national policy had been compiled on the issue. Minister Thoriq also stated that this policy will facilitate a clear path on identifying and resolving the issues faced by the Government in mitigating climate change effects.
Minister added that the policy was compiled with the assistance and contribution of scientists and experts in sustainable development, as well as past case studies. The Minister also noted the assistance of Government agencies, civil societies and other individuals in compiling the policy.
Minister Thoriq stated that the Policy will seek to achieve five objectives. As such the policy will seek to attain sustainable finance options to mitigate losses from climate change, lower carbon emissions and secure sustainable energy sources, societal education on climate change, infrastructure development and guide national action to contribute to international efforts to address climate change.
Delivering the key note address Fisheries and Agriculture Minister Dr. Shainee stated that even though Maldives is a small nation, there were many climate friendly actions we can implement. He stressed that it was vital that Maldives acclimatize to large scale use of renewable energy.
