Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Ziyad Bagir has stated that many mosques of Male’ required extensive repair.
He made the statement speaking to the press following a visit to the mosques of Male’. Mosques of Male’ has been transferred to the administration of the Islamic Ministry.
Dr. Ziyad stated that in the past two days, he had visited five mosques and checked on the conditions. He noted that roofs and ceilings of some mosques were damaged, along with poor plumbing and other issues. He also noted that some have taken to using the rooms of the mosques as living quarters.
Dr. Ziyad said that the cleaning of the 36 mosques of Male’ were cleaned by three groups, with around six employees for each group. Due to this, Minister noted that many of the mosques were not sufficiently clean.
He added that the Ministry would draft a plan for repair and upkeep of mosques after a full audit of the mosques.
The Minister also said that the issue of imams not attending to the mosques was a widely report and stated that he intended to find a solution to the issue.
