An embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been opened in the Maldives.
Maldivian Foreign Ministry had congratulated the move citing that Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz had expressed his interest in opening an embassy in the Maldives in President Yameen’s trip to the nation last January. Foreign Ministry added that the two leaders had engaged in discussions on the matter.
The opening of the Embassy is a new chapter in the bilateral relations of the two nations. Most importantly, the Embassy will deal with the issue of visas. Presently, pilgrims going to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages have to seek out their visas from Sri Lanka.
Of late bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and the Maldives had crossed new boundaries. As such, Saudi Arabia had pledged budget assistance, construction of new mosques and increasing of Hajj quota from 1,000 pilgrims to 2,000 pilgrims.
