In an unprecedented and unique gesture, symbolising the strength and depth of the bilateral relationship between India and Maldives, the entire Maldivian leadership, including Hon’ble President of the Republic of Maldives H.E. Mr Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Vice-President H.E. Mr Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor, visited the High Commission of India in Male and paid homage to Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, who passed away on July 27, 2015.
In his condolence message, President Abdulla Yameen called Dr. Kalam a close friend of Maldives, who would be an inspiration not just for Indians but for several generations of South Asians. He signed the condolence book along with his Vice-President Ahmed Adeeb and all cabinet Ministers. Former President H.E Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who had made an official visit to India in 2005 during Dr. Kalam’s presidential years, called the latter’s demise a great loss to all of human kind. Speaker of the Peoples Majlis H.E Abdulla Maseeh noted the significant contribution of Dr. Kalam towards India-Maldives Friendship in his condolence message.
On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon had offered condolences on behalf of the Government of Maldives and people on the death of former the President. Foreign Minister wrote in thecondolence book that Dr. Kalam “was a great man and a visionary leader who inspired millions of people around the world and in India. Maldives values his great contribution towards Maldives-India relations”.
Several other Maldivian diginitaries paid homage to Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Ambassadors and senior diplomats of friendly countries and Indian nationals visited the High Commission to pay their condolences and signed the condolence book.
