Hanimadhoo constituency MP, Hussein Shahudee has called to amend the Local Governance Act currently implemented in Maldives.
MP Shahudee made this remark speaking at yesterday’s session of the Peoples’ Majlis, during the plenary debate on the Bill on Amendment to the Decentralization Act, tabled on behalf of the Government by Riyaz Rasheed, MP for Vilufushi constituency.
Shahudee said that the amendment to the bill should include everything that will empower the councils and also make them free from undue political influence as noted by Kelaa constituency MP Ali Arif.
Shahudee noted some of the problems in the bill in the present state. He said that the number of councilors mentioned in the Act is seen as a burden.
“In its current state it is unlikely for potential candidates to get elected for councils. Many potential people are hesitant to run for the council election because the period of a council is three years,” he said.
Shahudee said that these are all problems that should be resolved from the amendment brought to the act.
