President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that economic independence of a nation and equal distribution of that wealth was vital to all citizens benefiting from national independence.
He made the statement in the official ceremony held to mark the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Independence Day.
President stated that Maldives was part of many global and regional financial organizations and that it was saddening that external influences have in the past attempted to influence the nation.
Therefore, President Yameen said it was vital that the economy of the nation was opened to the maximum number of investors globally, so as to minimize the hold one nation can have on a country. He cited that strategic alliances with international companies were the way forward for the nation.
He added that centralized development was key in establishing harmonious growth, job opportunities for youth, housing, education and creating centralized urban areas.
President Yameen stated that the existing societal framework of Maldives had come under unbearable pressure from outside influences.
He also stated that these pressures come under the guise of personal freedoms and human rights but are in reality designed to weaken the social and moral structure of the society and subsequently the independence of the nation.
