Maldivian independence was significant given that the British Empire was at the time the largest power in the world. Maldives achieved this only due to the resilient hard work carried out by a few, especially
that of former President Ibrahim Nasir.
He had taken it upon himself to combat English aggression in early 1963. Our independence was granted a mere two years later on 26th July. Stories of the feat have become public knowledge recently.
President Nasir employed British customs and silent treatment in the face of English intimidation tactics. President Nasir relied on scheduled appointments, resilience and a great deal of stubbornness in the negotiation, only signing the agreement as the way it was presented by the Government to the British.
The move for independence was sought after Abdullah Afeef was shifted to Seychelles from Addu with the assistance of the English forces stationed in Addu. Nasir had questioned such an action, to which
British responded that any British subject can be transferred as the two nations were under British protectorate.
The magnitude and the resoluteness of Nasir in his mission is a lesson and example for all leader present and future.
The independence declaration was signed in Sri Lanka. Maldivian Ambassador Abdu Sattar Moosa Didi was instrumental in carrying out President Nasir’s plans. He appears in the historic photo that was
taken that day along with Kandi Ahmed Ismail Manik and Kolige Ali Umar.
