Jumhooree Party Leader Qasim Ibrahim has stated that having a Vice President as part of the ruling apparatus was vital to the stability of the nation citing America as an example.
He made the statement speaking to press after today’s Parliament session.
He noted that American democratic system is older and more developed and added that they had chosen to keep a Vice President due to the gravitas of the role. Therefore, he cited that having a Vice President in Maldives was vital to the future of the nation.
Qasim stated that the issue facing the nation was not the issue of keeping a Vice President but rather how the Vice President was treated. He added that Maldivian Vice Presidents faced a personal issue, where they have a sense of over achievement and position, which in turn breeds hostility between the two. He cited that American Vice Presidents were mostly seen and not heard but there has been no cases where there was open hostility between the President and his second in command.
Qasim noted that two Vice Presidents had faced issues and called on future Vice Presidents to reflect on the past and their roles. He stressed that it is vital that the sanctity of the Constitution was maintained, even though it needed to be updated with the current times.
