Parliament has held debate on the issue of the role Maldives is to play in the Commonwealth.
The debate was kicked off following a letter sent by President Yameen to review the issue. The President’s letter was announced to the Parliament by the Speaker of the Parliament Ahmed Mohamed.
Members from ruling Progressive Party of Maldives stated that even though the Commonwealth was an international body, the organization cannot be allowed to interfere in the internal matters of the nation and the independence of the nation.
Vilufushi Constituency MP Riyaz Rasheed said that the Commonwealth had turned a blind eye to the various transgressions carried out by the Government of former President Mohamed Nasheed. He added that this Government was working within the legal means and to develop the nation. He stated that there was no justification for the Commonwealth’s actions.
Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party members voiced that the Commonwealth’s concerns were only due to the sole fact that the present Government was acting against the norms of civilized society.
All members of the Government coalition had argued on the position to leave the Commonwealth, while MDP members called to remain as part of the Commonwealth.
