Golden Jubilee debate has been carried out to mark 50 years to the nation’s independence.
President Abdullah Yameen was the chief guest of the ceremony held in TVM last night. Two teams hotly debated on the topic of size of the nation as the biggest challenge to the independence of the nation.
Debaters stated that a strong economy and legal system was key for the sovereignty of the nation. They added that this would prevent any foreign nations attempt to coerce the nation, citing Singapore and China as examples. The said that Singapore should be followed as an example of a successful nation.
They also took examples from Maldivian history noting the valor of those who had taken up the cause of national independence and self-determination in facing English and Portuguese.
