Commonwealth has no place in internal affairs: Members
Members of Parliament from the ruling Government coalition have stated that there was no place for an international body such as the Commonwealth in dictating internal affairs and encroaching on the sovereignty of the nation.

Members made the statement in the debate session of Maldives role in Commonwealth, which was debated on the behest of the President. President’s letter had requested members to reflect on the role and impact the nation had in the Commonwealth. The letter had requested the members to offer advice to the President on the issue.

The letter had not indicated that the President wished to finalize a decision on the matter.

Parliament had allotted three hours for the debate of the issue. It is believed that the issue will be debated in a series of debates.
