Parliament members are to debate on the issue of Maldives leaving the Commonwealth in today’s session.
The Parliament session is to start at 10.30 am. The issue was tabled to the session following a request by President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom to deliberate on the issue.
The issue rose following Government’s claim that some Commonwealth member states are exercising unjustified influence on the politics and policies of the nation. Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon had recently made this allegation, citing that the member states have made the assumption without proper reflection on the issue. She also claimed that the member states treat this Government differently.
