Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Ibrahim Muaz Ali, has said that the government is closely monitoring the investigation of the disappearance of the journalist Ahmed Rilwan.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Muaz said that the President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom himself has been closely monitoring the investigation with the respective authorities.
“In addition for him being a journalist he is from the youth. Although the government does not say that they are concerned every passing day, the respective authorities in the government are investigating the case to find him,” he said.
Muaz said that the concern is even more since Rilwan is a journalist and a youth but however the government is concerned if such an incident happens to a common citizen as well.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dunya Maumoon also issued a statement expressing concern regarding the disappearance of the journalist.
“The Government expresses deep concern on the sudden disappearance of Mr. Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla, Minivan News Journalist, who has been reported missing since 8 August 2014. The Foreign Minister noted that the Government and concerned authorities were committed to maximum effort in searching for the whereabouts of Minivan news journalist who was last seen on CCTV footage from Hulhumale’, Ferry Terminal in Male’, on the night of 8 August 2014. Ms Maumoon noted the extensive search efforts of the Maldives Police Services and other authorities expressing her wish for success in their efforts. The Minister also expressed concern on the act of intimidation and reprisals to journalists in general. ‘Freedom of media facilities a greater degree of interconnectedness and awareness in the community, and is the cornerstone of any democratic society. Therefore, the protection and safety of journalists is fundamental not only at an individual level, but at a national and international level as well’.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs noted her wishes and prayers that “Rilwan be found safe and sound”. She noted that the Government is committed to ensuring safety and security of all Maldivians.
