Former Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor for Maldives Islamic University.
His appointment to the position was announced on Monday.
Dr. Shaheem, had previously served as State Minister and Minister for Islamic Ministry, with three years of service as Minister. In his tenure in the Ministry he had initiated several reforms for the Ministry. His work has been accepted by the public
He stated that there are many in the Maldives who are highly educated, with many wishing to pursue an Islamic education. He also stated that such people need to be incentivized and opportunities provided in order to create scholars in the country.
Dr. Shaheem stated that he would prioritize Islamic research in the University. He added that he would focus on finding Islamic solutions to the issues posed by modern developments.
Dr. Shaheem was instrumental in bringing such a University into fruition. Forming an Islamic University in the nation was part of the present Government’s election manifesto. Following his appointment to the position as Islamic Minister, Dr. Shaheem had worked to ensure that the University would be formed at the earliest possible date. He added that he would work to ensure that Islamic values would be fostered in the public, for the betterment of the nation.
He was also the Chair of the Presidential Committee selected to create the Islamic University and was fundamental in gaining funds for the project from Muslim nations.
Dr. Shaheem thanked President Yameen for his appointment to the position, assuring that he would fulfill the position to the best of his means.
Additionally, former Education Minister and former Chancellor of Maldives National University was appointed as Chancellor of the Islamic University.
