Maldives Police Service require additional assistance in lowering the crime rates. Many have noted that the best assistance for lowering crime is ensuring that the perpetrators are given their punishments.
Crime statistics are worrying. Police statistics show that some criminals have been subject to over 100 stop and searches, 80 arrests and many cases sent to PG for prosecution.
If we are to make our youth into productive members of the society we have to ensure that criminals are punished for their crimes. This is done to rectify the mistakes they have committed, rather than punishing for the sake of punishing them. This is the method that is prescribed in Islam as well. Allah is all merciful, but there is a reason Allah had commanded punishments for crimes and transgressors, without accounting for bias.
If we are to expedite the criminal cases lodged in PG and Courts, we can carry it out in the same manner as for the budget allocation for Minivan 50 celebrations. In the year we celebrate the Golden Jubilee of nation, many of the citizens are under constant fear due to criminals roaming free in the public.
Government had already spent exorbitant amounts on Golden Jubilee celebrations. The question is if the public cannot enjoy these spectacles in a free environment, is the expenditure worth it?
Mugging has become so commonplace that even tourists are facing the issue. A tourist in Hulhumale was mugged in broad day light.
An individual reported to Miadhu that he presently has five cases lodged in PG office. He said that he is presently engaging in theft, to compensate for the expenditures that will be incurred while he is in prison. He added that some of his cases have been in the justice system for eight years.
Therefore, it is apparent that Police have to be empowered to carry out their mandates. Funding and support from PG is essential for this.
