STO has stated that fresh shipments of potatoes, onions and eggs being brought in and can manage stock till EId and will retail at lower prices.
Speaking to Miadhu, STO Senior General Manager Fathimath Aashaan stated that they had cleared a fresh shipment last Friday and that they were already in the market. She noted that other businesses had imported shipments but as they are selling at higher prices, the demand for STO has been overwhelming.
She also said that wholesalers are still able to buy in bulk. However, Aashaan said that they were only releasing one case of eggs per customer as a control means.
She added that for Ramdan, around 50,000 cases of eggs are required. However, the biggest challenge for such a shipment import, storing and shipment to Atolls, while maintaining the same quality.
In the market, prices of ordinary products have almost doubled. As such, price of a kilo of carrots had risen to MVR 70, which used to sell between MVR 20 and MVR 25 per kilo. Some shops report that the prices had doubled due to low supply as they had faced issues in releasing the containers from Customs.
