Parliament has passed the amendments for the National University, which now states that some senior members of MNU will be Presidential appointees.
The amendment, proposed by PPM MP for Maafannu Dhekunu Constituency Abdullah Rifau, was passed with the vote of 38 MPs. Sixteen MPs had voted against accepting the Bill.
The Bill states that out of the 13 members of the Council, nine are to be appointed by the President. Out of this, four will be appointed as part of the Council position while five will be appointed from various sectors. The four members indicated above are the Presidential appointees for the position of Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and two Deputy Vice Chancellors.
Prior to the amendment, the only Presidential appointee was the University Chancellor. Additionally, a general vote will be conducted to choose four members to the Council.
With the new amendment, foreigners can apply for the Council member slots. Additionally, bankrupt candidates and political party members have been made exempt from running for the position. Also, the tenure of the members has been fixed at five years instead of an unlimited tenure. In addition to this, all temporary members appointed to Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor positions cannot remain in the position for longer than six months.
