Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Government has held joint discussions last night, which was initiated by the Government.
Speaking to press after the discussions, Home Minister Umar Naseer and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) stated that the first round of discussions were quite fruitful and said that they were hopeful that results of such discussions will become apparent in the near future.
Home Minister Umar stated that PPM and MDP were the largest two parties in the country and as such, there were many aspects on which the two parties had common ground. He added that both parties agreed that solutions can only be sought out by negotiations instead of public demonstrations.
Minister Umar also stated that the aim of the negotiations were to seek out long term solutions to the issues facing the Maldivian political sphere instead of short term gains. He also said that presently negotiations were carried out between parties separately, but there was always room to hold joint discussions.
Ibu reported that MDP had presented their stipulations and that the Government would announce their decision regarding the stipulations in the next meeting.
The next round of discussions between MDP and Government will be held next Wednesday. Fisheries and Agriculture Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee and President’s Office Minister Abdullah Ameen also took part in last night’s discussions.
