Islamic Sharia will be applied regardless of a people advocating against it- Home Ministry

Home Ministry has said that the Islamic Sharia will be implemented in Maldives regardless of a people advocating against it.

Home Ministry made this remark in an interview to Miadhu Daily following an article published on the Irish Times criticizing Maldives for establishing a death penalty room in Maafushi Jail.

The media official of the Home Ministry stated that the Maldives is a Muslim country and Islamic Sharia will be implemented in Muslim states regardless of those who advocate against it.

“Regardless of those who oppose it in the international media, Islamic Sharia will be implemented in Muslim countries. Maldives is a Muslim country. Some of the international media have expressed concern regarding our preparations to implement the death penalty,” he said.

Meanwhile, According to IrishTimes, “In April, following a 60-year moratorium, the Muslim country’s government reactivated the death penalty. Facilities are being built at a prison on Maafushi Island to have murder convicts executed by lethal injection. The age of criminal responsibility in the Maldives is 10, but children as young as seven – who may be found guilty of certain crimes under Islamic sharia – could now potentially face a death sentence.”

The paper also alleged that “Executions of convicted minors would take place once they turned 18. The government has defended the measure in the face of international criticism, citing the state’s overcrowded prisons and rising violence between drug gangs. “
