Maldives today submitted its instrument of acceptance of the Doha Amendment to the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The instrument of acceptance was submitted to the United Nations by Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim at a ceremony held at UN Headquarters in New York today.
The decision for Maldives to accept the Amendment was adopted by the People’s Majlis on 13 April 2015. The Doha Amendment will enter into force upon submission of instrument of acceptance by three fourths of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, totaling 143 States. So far, 32 countries have ratified the Amendment.
The Kyoto Protocol commits Developed country Parties to the UN Climate Change Convention to individual, legally binding targets to limit or reduce their greenhouse gas emissions within a set period. The first commitment period for the Kyoto Protocol was from 2008 to 2012. The Doha Amendment which was adopted by Parties on 8 December 2012 in Doha, Qatar establishes a second commitment period for from 2013 to 2020. Under the Doha Amendment, Developed country Parties are to ensure that their aggregate anthropogenic Carbon dioxide equivalent emissions of greenhouse gases do not exceed their assigned amounts, with a view to reducing their overall emissions of such gases by at least 18 per cent below 1990 levels in within this commitment period.
