Keyodhoo constituency MP, Sheikh Moosa Nizar Ibrahim has said that the councils should not be deprived of the land ownership granted to them by the local council Act.
Sheikh Moosa Nizar made this remark speaking at the Twenty-Sixth Sitting of the Second Session held yesterday, plenary debate continued on the Bill on Amendment to the Decentralization Act, tabled on behalf of the Government by Riyaz Rasheed, MP for Vilufushi constituency.
Sheikh Moosa Nizar said that the constitution came into existence to actualize and perfect the rule of the people by the people for the people.
He said that granting all authority to the Executive power, the President is not how the modern democratic system works. He said that such a system is against the tenets and values of democratic rule.
“Therefore we have to empower the people. We have to bring development to the people. We have to relieve the sufferings from them,” he said.
Speaking against the Bill on Amendment to the Decentralization Act, Sheikh Moosa Nizar said that none of the governments have given the council any authority and they were not granted except the land ownership in the islands. He said that therefore depriving them of even that cannot be approved and should be condemned.
