High Court Judges Dr. Azmiralda Zahir, Abbas Shareef and Shuaib Hussain Zakariyya have been appointed to the High Court branch established in the south of the country.
Amendments made to the Court laws last December stipulates that branches of High Court must be established in two sectors of the country in addition to the High Court in Male’. Any rulings issued by the magistrate courts must be filed for appeal in that branch.
Supreme Court reported that the decision was reached in a meeting of the Supreme Court Judges Council held last night and that the decision was a unanimous one. The amendment made to the Court laws also stipulates that Judges for the said branches will be appointed by the decision of the Supreme Court.
The appointees were appointed to the High Court bench in 2011. Even though, Judges for the southern branch had been appointed, no appointments have been made for the branch to be established in the north of the country.
