The Parliament has accepted the amended bill on the Land Act, which proposes that plots of land received as inheritance, which amounts to lesser than 600 sq ft can be registered.
The amendment was proposed by ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary Group Deputy Leader and Vilufushi Constituency MP Riyaz Rasheed. The current Land Act prohibits the registration of plots of land smaller than 600 sq ft.
The bill was accepted to the Parliament by the unanimous vote of 51 MPs who took part in yesterday’s session. The bill has been forwarded to the National Development Committee for further deliberation.
The amended proposal corresponds to Clauses 12 and 25 of the present Land Act. Riyaz’s proposal states that even if the land received as inheritance after division among inheritors is lesser than 600 sq ft, that plot of land can be registered. He had also proposed to strike off clause 15 subsection (a) (i) and (a) (ii).
The clause presently states that in event where the inherited land plot is smaller than 600 sq ft, then the area cannot be registered to an individual.
