Jumhooree Party (JP) Leader Qasim Ibrahim has stated that he will not contest in any future Presidential elections.
He made the statement in a special interview given to Miadhu news today.
Qasim had previously contested in two elections and played the most instrumental and pivotal role within a coalition to usher in Presidents into power. He stated that he had contested in the two elections as he had a vision for the future of the nation and wished to see it actualized.
Even though he had stated that he will not contest in future elections, Qasim stated that he intends to remain in the service of the nation, with his contribution focused on an economic, social and political platforms.
He added that he had appealed to all Members of Parliament from the JP Parliamentary Group to support the act tabled in the Parliament to instate age gaps for prospective Presidents and Vice Presidents.
Qasim’s decision comes amid the cases filed against his company by the State. The resultant financial losses for the company had impacted most of the group. Additionally, the State had pressed terror charges against JP Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrahim, who is presently out of town.
Qasim has been noted primarily as a humanitarian, focusing his interests on economic and societal development. He had founded Villa College and Villa Foundation in addition to starting the first privately run international airport and a private airline. He is also the founder of the largest private media channel, Vmedia.
He concluded his address to Miadhu stating that he had always prioritized national interests and had always acted in the best interests of the public.
