Jumhooree Party (JP) Leader Qasim has appealed to the Party’s Parliamentary Group to support the amendments to be made to the age criteria of Presidents and Vice President.
He made the appeal via sms sent to the members of the PG Group. In the sms he called out to all members of the Group to support the amendment which states that the Presidential and Vice Presidential hopefuls have to be within the 30 to 65 year age group.
JP Spokesperson Ali Solih said that Qasim supports the motion and had personally texted and called all MP’s.
Any changes to the Constitution can only be made with three forths of the vote of the 64 members of the Parliament.
The Parliament had accepted the amendment and presently the amendment is being deliberated at the committee stage.
Presently, clause 109 subsection (c) states that the lowest age for Presidential and Vice Presidential hopefuls have to be older than 35 years old with no restrictions on the age cap.
A proposal was submitted earlier this year to cap the age criteria for President at 65 years. However, this proposal was revoked on March 3rd.
