Political solutions not required for development challenges: President
President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that economic solutions, instead of political ones, are required for development challenges.

He made the statement speaking in the opening ceremony of China- South Asia Exposition which is being held in China’s Kunming City.

President Yameen noted that foreign nations have recognized the advances Maldivian economy in the past years citing that Maldives have graduated from the least developed nations to that of a mid-level nation in terms of development.

He agreed that with this graduation came more responsibilities and cited that he was elected to the position by the public in order to revolutionize the entire economy. President Yameen stated that his policies were centered on stabilizing the economy, which had suffered many financial issues in the past five years, engineer more jobs for youth and to re-secure investor confidence.

President Yameen said that the only way for these policies would be actualized was to improve the infrastructure of the country. He stated that the proposed bridge between Male’ and Hulhumale’, expansion of Hulhumale’ and shifting commercial ports to Thilafushi were among the many plans under this infrastructure overhaul.

He added that Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Bill would be instrumental in creating interest from prospective investors such as China and other developed nations.

President Yameen noted Chinese participation in many of the development works carried out in the country. He added that his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping had assured of continued Chinese support in the form of Silk Route and resources such as the newly created Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
