Kendhoo constituency MP, Ali Hussein has said that differences of opinion should not lead to violence.
Ali Hussein made this remark speaking at the Twenty Fifth Sitting of the Second Session held yesterday, speaking on the Urgent Motion tabled by Imthiyaz Fahmy, MP for Maafannu-North.
The Urgent Motion, tabled in accordance with Article 145 of the Regulations governing the Proceedings of the People’s Majlis raised concern over the disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla who has been reported missing since August 8.
Ali Hussein said that the case of the missing journalist is a matter of concern and the nation should think deeply on the matter. He said that national debates should be held in this regard.
“Difference of opinion should never lead to violence. We should learn to live and let live. We should learn tolerance. We should implement this in the Majlis and outside the Majlis. This is how a democratic environment will be created in this nation,” he said.
“The problem at hand is differences in interpretation of Islam. Some take a literalist approach. Then there are liberalist Muslims. The difference is a difference between conservatives or literalists with liberalists. We need tolerance between these two schools of thoughts,” he said.
He said that the result of intolerance is now witnessed in the Maldivian society today.
