Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) has stated that the changes made to the Ramadan allowance was not a just change.
TEAM President MauroofZakir expressed his concerns regarding the changes passed by the Government on Wednesday.
Under the changes made to the law, private sector employees will be eligible for the standard MVR 3,000 allowance after a grace period of a year.
“This is a sign of exactly how much the Government is concerned about the welfare of the private sector employees. I call on the President not to ratify this amended allowance,” Mauroof said.
He also highlighted that it was unfair that the Muslim expatriates were made excluded from this amendment.
Mauroof added that majority of the Maldivian resort workers earned below MVR 6,000 and that they have always earned MVR 2,000 as Ramadan allowance. He said that it was doubtful that this allowance would be in place next year’s Ramadan.
President Abdullah Yameen is yet to ratify the amendments passed by the Parliament last Wednesday.
