Government will not hold political discussions with jailed convicts: Muaz
President’s Office Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali has stated that the Government will not hold political negotiations with jailed convicts.

Speaking to Vfm, Muaz stated that the Government had called for negotiations with the three main opposition parties, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Jumhooree Party (JP) and Adhaalath Party (AP). However, Muaz said that MDP’s decision to include jailed former President Mohamed Nasheed as part of the negotiation team raised questions over their sincerity in taking part in the negotiations. He added that the same applied for AP decision to include their President Sheikh Imran in the negotiations.

Muaz called on all to give priority to national interest rather than individual interests.

President Abdullah Yameen had previously stated that the sincerety of those takin part in the negotiation will be apparent only when the negotiations kicked off. He also assured that the Government was willing to sit down for negotiations and address the concerns of the citizens.
