Criminal Court issues detention for Imran until end of trial
Criminal Court had ordered that Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran to be placed in Police custody until the end of the trial.

Police had submitted an intelligence report at the trial held last night in Criminal Court. However, no details of the intelligence report had been made public by the Court.

The custody ruling was issued after the State had requested as such.

State lawyers had filed terrorism charges against Sheikh Imran, for his role in the May Day protests held against the Government. Lawyers had stated that Imran had willfully encouraged the protesters to engage in violent behavior and harm Police officers.

Sheikh Imran had denied the charges against him.

Popular lawyer, Husnu- Suood had represented Sheikh Imran in Court last night. He had requested a five day period to prepare for the case.

The judge’s bench had granted the period, stating that the next hearing of the case is yet to be scheduled. However, the bench had refused the defense appeal not to jail Sheikh Imran as he suffers from high blood pressure, high blood sugar and various related conditions.

Sheikh Imran was produced in Court handcuffed. He was allowed to meet and talk to his wife for a while. He is being tried by the same bench of Judges who had overseen and delivered a 13 year jail term for former President Mohamed Nasheed on similar charges.

State had also pressed similar charges on Jumhooree Party Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrahim and Council Member Sobah Rasheed. Both are presently out of country.
