“Will not send army officers to arrest people”: President Yameen
President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that this Government would not adopt a practice of arbitrarily arresting people by using the Army and that Police would not be used to arrest people from their residences.

He made the statements speaking in the ceremony held to open the regional airport at Raa Atoll Ifuru.

President Yameen stated that his Government would carry out all their activities within the means of the law and that anyone who circumvents the law will be held accountable, so long as his Government remained in power.

“Raa Atoll is the home of our brother Afrasheem. He was brutally murdered. We still face the sadness from that incident. I will answer this query. There are many spreading false rumors about his death, that I have a connection to his murder. The Government will seek to put an end to such false claims. I believe that I should file criminal charges against such people, rather than a defamation suit. I will file such a charge against Sheikh Imran. State’s Prosecutor General does believe such claims against me cannot be tolerated and must be retaliated. I wish to, the Maldivian public wishes to hear, what those people say in their defense,” President said.

President Yameen stated that such people have been previously tried in Courts, however, they had failed to say anything in their defense. He added that anyone who had been judged in the Courts and levied a penalty, have been delivered from within the Judicial system and processes. Therefore, he added that, he was merely a person who executed the decisions of the Court.
