A verdict is scheduled to be issued today regarding the appeal of arrest of MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed, Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdulla, and Jumhooree Party Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrahim in the early hours of morning on 2nd of May, following a court order alleging them of attempting to overthrow the government.
Ameen Ibrahim’s case is scheduled to be held at the High Court at 14:30 today. Sheikh Imran’s case is scheduled to be held at 14:45 today and Ali Waheed’s case is scheduled to be held at 14:55 today.
All three were arrested alleging them of attempting to overthrow the government and instigating the people to cause violence and damage to government assets.
The lawyers have been stating that the three leaders were remanded for fifteen days in detention without even considering the lack of evidence for the allegations made by the Police.
Meanwhile, Detainees, lawyers and families of detainees from May Day protest have reported of police brutality and abuse during and after arrest on 1 May.
Police arrested 195 people, including minors, and the leaders of all the main opposition parties.
The crackdown by the Yameen regime constitutes one of the biggest mass arrests in the Maldives’ history.
An estimated 25,000 people poured onto the streets of Male’ on Friday afternoon, demanding an end to government tyranny and the release of political prisoners.
The three political parties put aside their differences and joined forces earlier this year, in response to a wave of anti-democratic actions by the Yameen regime, including the firing of the country’s Chief Justice, harassment of the Elections Commission, and jailing of opposition politicians.
