Deputy Leader of the Jumhooree Party, Dr. Hussein Rasheed has called the government to protect the human rights of those detained by Police.
Speaking at the press conference held at the Adhaalath Party office yesterday, Dr. Hussein Rasheed said that it is shameful for the government to torture the political leaders and others arrested during Friday’s protest.
“They did what they did. They said what they said all in front of the people. It is the government’s problem that they are unable to investigate them without keeping them in detention away from the people,” he said.
He said that all are innocent until proven guilty is true with all the political detainees. “There rights should be protected. If this is not done then it is another oppression from the government,” he said.
“All human beings should be treated with compassion. It is against human rights to make them suffocate and subject them to such torture methods,” he said.
Police arrested 195 people, including minors, and the leaders of all the main opposition parties.
MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed, Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdulla, and Jumhooree Party Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrhaim were all arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning, following a court order alleging them of attempting to overthrow the government.
The crackdown constitutes one of the biggest mass arrests in the Maldives’ history.
An estimated 25,000 people poured onto the streets of Male’ on Friday afternoon, demanding an end to tyranny and the release of political prisoners.
