Capacity for rectification cannot be achieved except by listening to the people- VP
Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the capacity for reform and rectification cannot be achieved by a government except by listening to the people.

The Vice President made this remark speaking at the Maldives Media Council’s Journalism Award 2014 ceremony.

He said that the biography of the Caliph Omar bin Khattab shows that reminding the person of authority is the responsibility of the people and it is incumbent upon him to listen to the people.

“The second Caliph of the Muslims, Omar bin Khattab was once told to fear Allah. And a person present among the people considered that to be a transgression. But Omar said: If that man does not remind me and if I do not have the capability to listen to him, then there will be no rectification,” he said.

Vice President Dr. Jameel said that proclaiming the truth is an obligation upon every individual and no one should fear to proclaim the truth.

“We should do our best to proclaim the truth and spread the truth,” he said.

“It is an obligation upon us to make the government accountable as we highlight their good. There is no problem in it,” he said.

The Vice President noted that it is saddening that the trust of the people on the media is getting lesser and lesser as the media blooms in the country.
