Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon has said that the government will not yield to the demands to release a prisoner after he is proven guilty following proper legal proceedings.
In an interview to the state media, the Minister said that after Nasheed's 13 year imprisonment, several countries have been urging the government to "meddle" with the matter.
She said that the government will not accept any such demands regardless of the pressure.
Dunya said that yielding to such demands will be compromising the sovereignty of the Maldives which will lead other countries to believe that they can criticize the internal matters of the country.
The foreign minister called all people to not support such behavior. She said that the countries making such demands do not care about the well-being or the future of Maldives or the citizenry.
“Hence, we have to protect our independence and sovereignty,” she said.
